Philadelphia 76ers: Top 15 moments of Allen Iverson’s career
6. NBA MVP in 2001
The 2000-01 season was magical, both for the Sixers and Allen Iverson. Despite questionable depth and ample doubt, A.I. led the Sixers to a No. 1 seed while earning his first (and only) MVP award. It was one of many special moments during his illustrious career.
Iverson averaged a league-high in points (31.1) and steals (2.5), playing the workhorse role on both ends. He carried a massive offensive burden and still made an impact defensively, something few stars can accomplish with regularity. Iverson did it every season.
The diminutive point guard was the smallest MVP in league history, embodying the “heart over height” cliche. There’s a reason some call Iverson the best pound-for-pound player in NBA history. His quickness and skill level was rare.
When the ballots came in, there wasn’t much doubt either. Iverson dominated the conversation with 93 first-place votes, outpacing the second-place Tim Duncan, who accrued just 18. Shaquille O’Neal, the reigning MVP at the time, finished third with just seven.
Despite feuds during their time together, both Iverson and Coach Larry Brown embraced each other, with the latter speaking to Iverson’s improved leadership.
"“He’s not only the best player on the team, he’s become a great teammate. I’m like a proud father watching him develop and the way he plays and to recognize the heart he has.” — Daily Press"
Iverson was the first Sixer since Moses Malone in 1982-83 to win league MVP. It added another pillar to A.I.’s strong foundation as arguably the franchise’s most emblematic star. He never won a title, but the accolades still speak volumes about his ability.
