12. 50-point game vs. Cavaliers in 1997
The reigning No. 1 overall pick, Iverson didn’t wait long to show NBA teams his offensive dynamism. He reached a peak on April 12, 1997, dropping 50 points on the road in Cleveland. The Sixers didn’t win, but Iverson set the rookie scoring record nonetheless.
Even in a loss, Iverson’s tantalizing potential was on full display. He shot an efficient 17-for-32 from the field, including 11 of 18 free throws and five of nine triples. He added five rebounds and six assists for good measure. We can excuse the nine turnovers.
Iverson was in the midst of an impressive streak, tallying three consecutive 40+ point games prior to his eruption in Cleveland. He would extend that streak to five in the next contest, setting another rookie record — one that hasn’t been broken yet.
Guards typically take time to adjust in the NBA. Rookies aren’t supposed to have an immediate impact, much less 50-point explosions. Iverson was the No. 1 pick, meaning expectations were naturally high, but his production was unprecedented.
Iverson already had the full package — advanced handles, an elite pull-up game and an unavoidable defensive presence. He was tearing up the league at 21, signaling things to come. He made the most of his first impression that season.
