Allen Iverson will go down alongside Julius Erving and Wilt Chamberlain as one of the greatest Sixers of all-time. His scoring acumen and dynamic personality made him a historically influential player, both on and off the court.

March 1, 2014 was the culmination of a legacy almost two decades in the making.

The Sixers sent Iverson’s No. 3 into the rafters, cementing his legendary status and ensuring no Sixer will ever don the same number. With a capacity crowd and an entire city behind him, Iverson got the farewell he deserved.

Here’s how ESPN recalled the night.

"“Allen Iverson cupped his hand to his left ear and asked to hear his favorite tune one more time. With that command, 20,000 roaring Philadelphia 76ers fans gave AI the standing ovation he earned by stamping himself as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.” — ESPN"

The relationship between Iverson and Philadelphia was wholly unique. He galvanized an entire city and an entire fanbase, transforming the Sixers from underwhelming to highly competitive in mere seasons. His 2001 Finals run, even though it ended in defeat, will live forever in Sixers lore.

Joel Embiid has blessed the Sixers with another big personality, but Iverson holds his own spot in history. With former teammates, coaches and executives in attendance, March 1 marked an extraordinary celebration of Iverson’s immortal status in Philly sports.
