Orlando Magic
The Magic don’t have much point guard depth. It’s basically DJ Augustin and Jerian Grant, neither of whom inspire confidence long term. At 14-16, the Magic are currently in the playoff hunt, but the sustainability of that pursuit is highly questionable.
Adding Fultz makes more sense for Orlando than almost any team. Assuming the future matters more than the present (it does), giving away an expiring contract and some well-protected draft capital for a former No. 1 pick is a worthwhile investment.
The Sixers get Ross, who can space the floor, defend a couple positions and add some much-needed firepower to the second unit. Frazier hasn’t see much floor time this season, but he’s a long, versatile wing with tantalizing defensive upside. He’s a nice throw-in.
With such low stakes in the 2019 draft — the talent outside the lottery isn’t overwhelming — the Magic are taking a calculated risk. If they sneak into the playoffs, it’s not franchise-ending. If not, it’s another young piece alongside Mo Bamba, Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz.
Orlando feels like a natural fit on both sides. It’d also be a low-pressure, under-the-radar environment for Markelle, which could have benefits.
