T.J. McConnell: An actual perimeter threat
With Markelle Fultz sidelined indefinitely, T.J. McConnell will man the backup point guard position for the foreseeable future. He’s doing a solid job, providing a steady hand on offense and drawing praise with his full-court defense.
There are holes in McConnell’s defensive profile, starting with his height and (underwhelming) athleticism. Bigger guards and wings target him, often with success. The biggest issue, however, might be his lack of shooting. Teams just don’t defend him on the perimeter, and he doesn’t always do enough to provide tangible value.
Spacing around Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Jimmy Butler is important. When McConnell doesn’t have the ball, he’s virtually useless. Aside from the rare corner triple, he’s more floor-compressor than valuable contributor. He’s limited — something everyone understands — but those limitations stand out on a competitive team.
