1. Ben Simmons is a special talent
There’s been a lot of chatter about trading Ben Simmons lately. The fit isn’t perfect, and Simmons definitely complicates the relationship between Embiid, Butler and the non-shooting McConnell. It’s difficult to work around the spacing, and Brett Brown must get creative as a result.
Even with the undeniable challenges that come with Simmons’ skill set, he’s an overwhelming positive on the court. That’s especially true when he’s aggressive, pushing the tempo, making crisp decisions and putting his thumbprint on the game, as Brown likes to say.
That was the case Sunday, with Simmons crashing the board, scoring efficiently and making some impressive dimes. It resulted in 20 points, 22 rebounds and nine assists — a stat line the collective NBA hasn’t seen since Barkley in 1987. It’s worth noting Simmons is only 22 years old.
The fit is imperfect, but there are scenarios were talent takes precedent on over fit. Simmons, along with Embiid and Butler, is one such scenario. He’s too good — the trio as a whole is too good — to jettison a young star because of moderate spacing issues.
In the future, Simmons will improve his shooting. He’s already taking more mid-range shots, so it’s a clear emphasis for the soon-to-be All-Star moving forward. There’s time to improve and the Sixers’ starting five is statistically elite as it is.
Put the trade talk aside and appreciate just how special Simmons’ talent is.
