Philadelphia 76ers shooting guard J.J. Redick finally got his first player of the week award half way through this season.

A back injury slowed down Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons struggled with turnovers this week and Jimmy Butler only had one really good game. None of the Philadelphia 76ers “Big 3” had a spectacular week, where as J.J. Redick filled his role well above expectation. For that reason, Redick claims his first player of the week award this season.

In the Sixers less than ideal win against the New York Knicks, Redick was the team’s second leading scorer. He finished with 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, three turnovers and two fouls, while shooting 6-13 on field goal attempts, 3-8 on 3-pointers and 7-8 on foul shots. Redick’s good night was over shadowed by Simmons 20 points, 22 rebounds and nine assists outing.

More from The Sixer Sense

The impressive win against the Minnesota Timberwolves was the only game this past week Redick didn’t score at least 20 points in. He had 15 points, three assists, one turnover and two fouls, while making 5-11 shots from the floor, 3-9 shots from downtown and both of his free throw attempts. This was easily Redick’s worst performance, but he didn’t need to play at an elite level with the rest of the team clicking on all cylinders.

Redick had his best shooting game of the week in the win against the Indiana Pacers. The veteran ended with 20 points, three rebounds, five assists and one turnover, while converting 7-12 from the field and 6-9 from behind the arc. Redick was the Sixers third leading scorer in the contest and it was the seventh time where Redick made a minimum of five 3-point shots this season. He also made NBA history by becoming 23rd in made 3-pointers, moving ahead of Mike Miller.

In a heart breaking loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Redick was second in scoring for the Sixers. He finished the contest with 22 points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal and two turnovers, while shooting 6-13 on field goal attempts, 4-10 on 3-pointers and 6-7 from the charity stripe.

Honorable mention

Jonah Bolden has made the transition to becoming Embiid’s primary backup during this week and its produced positive results. Head coach Brett Brown likes the move and for the week Bolden’s averaged 5.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.8 blocks, 2.3 turnovers and 2.8 fouls. He also scored a career high of 14 points against the Timberwolves.

Redick averaged 19.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.3 steals, 1.8 turnovers and 1.0 foul, while making 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers on the week. In four games this past week, Redick made an impressive 16 3-pointers. With the impressive trio that the Philadelphia 76ers have, it won’t happen often that J.J. Redick would get the player of the week award, but this week he was able to get it.
