Jared Harper, Auburn
An undersized point guard at 5-foot-11, Jared Harper could find it difficult to adjust to the NBA’s size and physicality. Defensive switching and versatility are more prevalent than ever, putting smaller guards at a disadvantage. That alone will dissuade some teams from drafting Harper.
Even so, an excellent tournament run has placed him on second round radars. The Sixers should be very much interested in potential backup point guard options given the uncertainty regarding next summer’s free agency. Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris (and maybe J.J. Redick) will cost quite a bit.
Harper has several NBA traits, including his quick-twitch athleticism and dynamic shot-making. While size is obviously a mitigating factor, Harper can create shots at all three levels, blowing by slower defenders and using shifty handles to generate space. His touch around the rim helps make up for the perpetual size disadvantage.
Defense will be the primary concern. No matter how much effort Harper exerts, he simply can’t compete physically with most high-level NBA guards. It’s similar to McConnell, whose effort can’t be conflated with actual defensive success. Isaiah Thomas is the extreme example.
