Michael Carter-Williams scored 15 points for Orlando against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 25 as he began his second 10-day contract with the Magic in his attempt to stay in the NBA. His old team’s non-existent wing defense gave him a chance to get a career boost, before that night as he had only appeared in three games, scoring a average of 3.0 points. Orlando is the second organization Carter-Williams has played with this season.
It was not suppose to be like this. It was MCW, not Ben Simmons, who was suppose to come out of “The Process” as the point guard that would lead to Sixers to championship contention.
After GM Sam Hinkie dealt Jrue Holiday in the Nerlens Noel deal the Sixers needed a point guard. A promising big man from Greece named Giannis Antetokounmpo was still available at No. 11, but Hinkie went with Carter-Williams, a 6-foot-6 stringbean guard out of Syracuse.
It looked like Hinkie had hit the jackpot as Carter-Williams was named 2014 Rookie of the Year as he averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 1.86 steals.
However, Hinkie saw how the league was going and a point guard who could not shoot (MCW was only about 25 percent on three-point tries) from outside could be a liability down the road. On Feb. 19th, 2015, Hinkie arranged a three-team deal with Milwaukee and Phoenix.
The Sixers received a first -round pick of the Lakers that turned into Mikal Bridges in the 2019 draft (which then became Zhaire Smith and an unprotected 2021 Miami first rounder that was later on used as part of the Tobias Harris trade).
The trade might have ended up well for the 76ers, it opened up a spot that Simmons eventually filled and we will see how Smith develops.
However, Carter-Williams was never the same once he left the Sixers. He slid from starter to sub to being traded, released, spending some time in the G-League and now playing on a 10-day contract and hoping to stick with the Magic.
Did Carter-Williams look good simply because he was on a bad team and got lots of playing time and impressive stats from it? Or was he a talent who was misused after leaving coach Brett Brown.
That is one of the mysteries of “The Process”.
