Nik Stauskas was suppose to develop into what J.J. Redick is for the Philadelphia 76ers now. A spot up shooter from the perimeter. Sadly, he never developed into that player and was eventually part of the Jahlil Okafor trade that sent both players to the Brooklyn Nets. Despite Stauskas never developing into the player that could have been a part of Sixers roster, he still was an important part of “The Process”.

“Getting a young prospect and draft assets was the goal of Hinkie and he made it happen when he got Stauskas.”

The trade that was made to acquire the former lottery pick was in full spirit of “The Process”. The Sacramento Kings needed cap space in the summer of 2015 and former GM Sam Hinkie was more than willing to oblige. Before getting into the details of the trade, this is easily the worst trade that the Kings GM Vlade Divac has made during his tenure.

The Sixers sent two foreign prospects that they had just drafted before the deal in Arturas Gudaitis and Luka Mitrovic to the Kings. Sacramento, in-turn, sent two salary dumps in Carl Landry and Jason Thompson, along with a young prospect in Stauskas, the rights to swap first round picks in 2017 and the Kings first round pick in 2019. Thanks to another trade made after Hinkie’s reign was over, the 2017 pick became Markelle Fultz.

Getting a young prospect and draft assets was the goal of Hinkie and he made it happen when he got Stauskas. While Stauskas didn’t pan out as long term piece for the Sixer future, there’s no doubt that he made progress in his development while in Philly. His offense didn’t develop fast enough and his defense just wasn’t good. That was what made it impossible for him to be with the Sixers long term.

In terms of his role for this All-Time “Process”, Stauskas would be the end of the bench guy that would only get garbage minutes. He could also provide spot minutes on the wing if injury occurred but he wouldn’t be in the normal rotation.
