NBA Draft 2019: Mock Draft 5.0
The Knicks struck out big, landing third in the lottery despite finishing dead last in the NBA. It could still yield a quality prospect, though, as R.J. Barrett is the overwhelming favorite to join Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith Jr. and New York’s youthful core.
Before the season, many pegged Barrett as the odds-on favorite to go No. 1 on draft night. Zion was quick to earn that title, but Barrett was among the most productive players in college basketball. At just 18 years old, he became the first high-major player to average 22 points, seven boards and four assists.
Duke ran its offense through Barrett, for better or worse. He’s a relentless slasher who uses his size, strength and athleticism to finish inside. His touch could improve in spots, but he has a mid-range game and an improved three-point stroke to balance out his straight-line mentality.
Whether it’s as a new cornerstone or a trade chip, Barrett makes the most sense in New York.
