It’s rare to find a mid-major guard favorited to go second overall, but here we are. Ja Morant built on a spectacular freshman season with an even better sophomore season, performing well against high-major opponents when given the chance. He’s in the same tier as Barrett.
There are concerns about Morant’s thin 175-pound frame, but he’s an elite-level athlete nonetheless. He’s demonic in the open court, shedding defenders with quick direction changes and showcasing both finesse and explosiveness at the rim. He’s also the draft’s best passer, earning tentative Trae Young comparisons — though Young remains the better prospect. He can pass with both hands from any angle and takes pride in setting up teammates.
Morant is also dynamic in the halfcourt, shredding defenses in the pick-and-roll with his passing and pull-up shooting. He’s in need of mechanical changes, but Morant has range and touch. His low release point is the primary concern. He also needs to play harder on defense.
