2. New York Knicks
Even as Knicks rumors lose steam, there’s still a chance at least one major free agent makes his way to New York this summer. If the Knicks strike out on KD and Kyrie, Philadelphia’s free agents could be next up on the front office’s list of priorities.
For Butler, his decision depends on personal preference more than anything else. If he doesn’t care about role and wants to win, Philadelphia is the clearest path toward winning a title. If he wants expanded responsibilities and a more marketable town, New York has obvious appeal.
The Knicks have two free agent slots and haven’t mess up their cap situation in an AD trade. Butler could sign in New York and begin recruiting. Or vice versa. He could sign in New York after KD or Kyrie signs. He’s good friends with Kyrie.
Harris seems like a more realistic target for New York, though. Harris mentioned style of play as an important factor in his decision. One has to think he also means role. Harris’ role was limited in scope playing next to Embiid, Simmons and Butler in Philadelphia. He’d have more freedom in NYC.
The Knicks could also make a push for Redick as a last resort. J.J. lives in Brooklyn and could be persuaded to leave the Sixers for an at-home job if New York offers more money. It would be an extreme last resort, but not an impossible one.
