Philadelphia 76ers: 5 teams who pose biggest threat in free agency
1. Brooklyn Nets
The Nets are in a prime position. Kyrie Irving to Brooklyn feels like a near-lock. That makes the Nets — a young, well-constructed roster in a major city — quite the destination for potential free agents. Butler and Harris both fit in different ways.
Right now, Brooklyn has separated itself as the biggest potential threat for Harris. Not only does Harris fit a need, but he’d see an expanded role as Irving’s second fiddle. He’s also a Brooklyn native and could be drawn to playing in his hometown.
Given the vibe during the season, the narrative behind Harris’ impending free agency has been quite the surprise. Rather than being seen as the favorite to return, many now anticipate his departure. Butler feels substantially more likely to re-sign in Philadelphia.
If Butler were to leave, however, Brooklyn is a very real threat. He’s good friends with Kyrie and could view Brooklyn as a place to compete and unlock his full skill set. There were times during the season where Butler’s role felt out of whack. It’d be a more natural fit next to Kyrie in Kenny Atkinson’s system.
The Nets have money, the allure of New York and a deep, competitive roster. There’s a lot to like when it comes to impending free agents. Brooklyn would also be a favorite to add J.J. Redick if they were inclined to offer a signifiant amount. It’s family above all else for Redick at this point.
