1. Offensive fit
Brett Brown will appreciate Horford’s presence. The Sixers’ offense features a high dosage of dribble-handoffs, an area Horford excels in. He also fits into the pick-and-roll, whether it’s rumbling toward the basket or popping to the 3-point line for open shots.
The Sixers can infuse Horford into the same sets Embiid runs. He’s a better passer in the post and does an exceptional job of reading defenses and locating open teammates. When Embiid and/or Simmons sit, Horford is someone who can help shoulder the playmaking burden.
Horford’s 36 percent 3-point clip last season was a major decline compared to his 42.9 percent mark in 2017-18, but he’s still a reliable spot-up shooter who will have more open looks in Philadelphia.
Expect the Sixers to once again focus on hunting mismatches. Few teams are equipped to thoroughly defend the Sixers’ jumbo-starting five. Horford, Simmons, Embiid and Harris can also punish smaller defenders inside. Richardson can score over the top of smaller guards as well.
Horford, in a general sense, will help the offense run smoother. He’s a willing ball-mover, prioritizing the right play over individual shot attempts. He will set strong screens, drop dimes and find ways to sneak onto the scoreboard. He’s a delight to watch closely and someone fans are prone to undervaluing. He’s going to fit the Sixers’ offense really, really well.
