2. Mike Scott

A pleasant surprise, Mike Scott far exceeded his expected value last season. A virtual throw-in to the Tobias Harris megatrade, Scott is now on contract for two more seasons. He stepped up as the Sixers’ second-most important reserve in the postseason — including a game-winning triple in the Brooklyn series.

When the Sixers stagger Joel Embiid and Al Horford, Scott will spend time next to both. He’s an ideal fit in that regard — a hard-nosed defender and 3-point sniper who can benefit from both on a stylistic level.

Embiid will draw attention inside, allowing Scott to drift into open spot-up 3s. Horford is a more active passer, using face-up opportunities and post-ups to lull defenders to sleep before rocketing passes to open teammates. Scott has chemistry with Horford from their Atlanta days.

The Sixers will give Scott a steady dose of minutes at the 4-spot. His shooting might regress, but on the whole, Scott has been a respectable shooter for much of his career. His defense, while not great, fits Philadelphia’s switch-heavy scheme.

Brown will need to keep shooters on the floor. Scott is perhaps the best spot-up shooter on the bench. He’s also a veteran who knows the system, a benefit considering the Sixers’ end goal and need for continuity.
