Why the Minnesota Timberwolves do it

Minnesota has one of the least desirable contracts in the NBA courtesy of Andrew Wiggins. He has been much improved this year, but they still lack shooting and perimeter defense. Robert Covington has long been on the trade block and Jeff Teague’s role on the team has seemingly decreased with each season. Swapping Teague and bringing in Tyler Johnson results in a wash. So, the main focus of the trade is whether the return is on par with trading away Covington.

The latest rumors have shown them angling for a first-round pick. This trade has them returning a former first-round pick in Zhaire Smith. It also brings in Mike Scott on a two-year affordable contract which helps them space the floor when Karl-Anthony Towns patrols the center position.

Furthermore, they add two future second rounders including the Atlanta Hawks 2020 selection which currently projects to be the 31st overall pick. A former first-rounder, a near first-rounder, and filler would prove to be a strong return for Covington.
