1. Al Horford

If this was stated weeks ago, it would be a no-brainer. But, given Al Horford’s recent play, it borders on “hot take” territory to say he should not be traded.

Horford was signed to a four-year, $109 million contract this offseason largely in part as insurance to Joel Embiid. The Sixers’ biggest issues last season arose from the lack of a competent rim protector behind Embiid. So, it only made sense to sign the best center on the market this summer to safeguard against offensive and defensive floundering with Embiid off the floor. In his short time in Philadelphia, Horford has ensured that.

Horford has, however, struggled offensively in recent weeks. Some attribute this to his age or fit with the offense, which are both valid concerns. But, to rightfully address those concerns, Horford needs to be put in a position to thrive offensively, not traded.

As I have previously suggested, Horford should occupy the sixth-man role, for his value behind is Embiid is too great to trade him. He should always be on the floor without Embiid and surrounded by competent pick and roll ball handlers so that he can showcase his talents as a screener and pick-and-pop guy.

If the Sixers do get rid of Horford, the Sixers’ championship hopes will follow.
