With the injury to their star point guard, the Philadelphia 76ers should at least consider adding another point guard to the roster.
Philadelphia 76ers star point guard Ben Simmons could miss at least two weeks, probably longer than that, according to Andrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. With the postseason only a little over a month away, this was the last thing the Sixers needed. With only Raul Neto being the only other true point guard on the roster, the 76ers don’t have many options moving forward.
Alec Burks and Shake Milton are both combo guards that are limited in their capabilities in running an offense. Neto isn’t much of an offensive threat and can be taken advantage of on the defensive end. The 76ers waived their only other true point guard in Trey Burke earlier this season.
It’s fair to say that outside of Simmons, Philly’s best playmaker is big man Al Horford, which should have the club’s coaching staff and front office worried. It was clear that even before this injury, it would have benefited the Sixers to upgrade their point guard depth chart.
In the past, I wrote about how the 76ers should waive Kyle O’Quinn to bring in another playmaker. While I’ve championed for Philly to bring in a local in Dion Waiters, he’s not a point guard, which is the team’s biggest need right now.
There are at least three point guards available in free agency that should be an upgrade over Neto. Each has their own unique strength that should help improve the Sixers roster moving forward.
