The Spurs were atypically messy this season. Not necessarily from an execution standpoint, but from a roster construction standpoint. San Antonio simply lacks the personnel to contend in a modern league, even if Gregg Popovich is the coach. Precious Achiuwa is a step in the direction of a true rebuild.

Achiuwa is not the most Spursian prospect. His appeal is rooted more in athleticism and upside than it is in basketball I.Q. and impact on winning. He’s a hulking 6-foot-9 forward who can terrorize opponents in transition. He has some serious appeal as a small-ball center too.

San Antonio’s frontcourt is set at the moment, but Jakob Poeltl could leave this summer and LaMarcus Aldridge is drafting further and further from his prime. Achiuwa profiles as a strong long-term successor to Aldridge at the four.
