The Celtics are expected to pursue a backup point guard to grow in Kemba Walker’s shadow. R.J. Hampton is a strong choice — he’s raw, sure, but the Celtics have depth and a good developmental track record. He would find himself in good hands.
Hampton spent his freshman season playing overseas in the NBL, where injuries derailed his season. When on the court, he struggled to match the physicality of professional basketball, which is understandable for any young point guard. He still showed promise, and many still have him pegged as a potential lottery pick.
A silky athlete, Hampton has length and springiness NBA teams will covet. He can create his own shot fluidly, he’s dynamic in the pick-and-roll, and his three-point stroke should come around. He will need to iron out significant flaws at the next level, but Boston is a safe place for that ironing to occur.
