The Spurs are on track to miss the postseason for the first time in eons. As the shining star of Gregg Popovich fades, the future of DeMar DeRozan hangs in the balance, and the prime years of LaMarcus Aldridge drift gently into the past, it’s time for San Antonio to angle for a rebuild.
Precious Achiuwa addresses the potential need for frontcourt reinforcements once the Aldridge days are over. The Spurs have other talent up front — Jakob Poeltl most notably — but Achiuwa is a top shelf athlete who presents more upside on paper.
There’s a lot Achiuwa must prove at the next level. He’s certainly athletic, and should emerge as a rangy, multi-positional defender because of it, but he’s also raw. Luckily San Antonio has one of the best developmental records in recent history. This is as good a spot as any for him.
