The Blazers are in a tricky spot. Not in position to compete, yet too immediately talented to opt for a rebuild. Until something forces the needle one way or the other — such as a Damian Lillard trade request — Portland will remain on the fringe of Western Conference contention.

That in mind, Patrick Williams makes a lot of sense. The Blazers have some holes on the wing — holes Rodney Hood cannot adequately fill long-term. Williams is a talented scorer who has earned comparisons to Danilo Gallinari for his craft and creativity. He’s a smooth finisher at the rim, a capable pull-up shooter, and a fairly smart all-around player.

Williams does a lot of little things well. He can screen and roll, he passes unselfishly, and in time, he should improve as a long-distance shooter. On defense, he’s built like a semi truck and plays hard. He doesn’t have a ton of vertical pop, but the tools are impressive still.
