R.J. Hampton managed to carve out a consistent role in Australia’s professional ranks, but his season was cut short by injury. He was also terribly inconsistent — not unexpected for a teenager in a man’s league, but still a red flag that could sink his draft stock. Hampton was universally top-10 before the season.

The Celtics pounce on the upside. Hampton has tremendous physical tools at 6-foot-5, and projects as a capable combo-guard, if not a full-fledged point guard. The Celtics need another playmaker to develop behind Kemba Walker, and Hampton in a viable option in light of Carsen Edwards’ brutal rookie season.

Hampton played inefficient basketball this season, and concerns about his shooting percentages will translate to the NBA. He’s a slippery ball-handler who can dart inside, pressure the rim, and create his own looks. But how efficiently he hits those looks — plus how far he comes along as a playmaker — will determine his success at the next level.
