The Nuggets have fewer “needs” than most teams. The roster is fairly stacked — so much so the concern is trading players ahead of extension dates, not bringing more youth onto the roster. This pick could go any number of directions as a result. Robert Woodard makes sense, if only to satiate the NBA’s burning desire for two-way wings.
Woodard has risen up draft boards all season. He too is an explosive athlete who, at 6-foot-7, possesses an admirable blend of physical tools. He is still a limited player on offense, and his success as a 3-point shooter remains small in sample size, but he hustles and plays unselfish basketball. The Nuggets can work with a raw athlete who plays unselfishly.
On defense, Woodard should defend NBA wings without issue. He rotates well, understands his place in the defense, and has the strength to handle stronger players on switches and in the post. He doesn’t have a ton of lateral quickness for 6-foot-7, but his vertical explosiveness presents intrigue in other areas of the floor.
