The Raptors have always targeted players who still need a degree of calibration. Who have the tools, but are incomplete. Leandro Bolmaro is an intriguing iteration of that oft-recycled equation — immensely skilled, yet critically flawed. He has all the hallmarks of a jumbo-sized NBA playmaker, but his lack of a reliable jumper is a significant roadblock to success.
Bolmaro is a dynamic passer at 6-foot-7. He can peer over defenders, operate in the screen-and-roll, and use either hand to locate open teammates. His ambitions can sometimes overtake his instincts — a negative assist-to-turnover ratio is never great — but Bolmaro’s passing skills are a major draw. In the right system, under the right development team, he should develop into a fine playmaker.
On defense, Bolmaro moves his feet well and can defend multiple positions. The Raptors have a void on the wing in Kawhi Leonard’s absence, and while OG Anunoby is a capable replacement, more depth is never a problem. If Bolmaro can complement his size and skill with a better 3-point stroke, he’ll outperform this draft slot. He may end up as a draft-and-stash pick, which Toronto can afford.
