The Celtics need help in the frontcourt, and while Pokusevski is an exciting prospect only a few spots earlier, he’s not ready for NBA basketball in year one. Xavier Tillman is, and he’s someone who could help phase Enes Kanter out of Boston’s short (and long)-term plans.
Tillman is a solid all-around big. He does the little things to contribute to winning. He’s a forceful finisher at the rim, he’s an unselfish passer, and he sets solid screens along the perimeter. His 3-point shot is still unproven, but it’s there. It’s something he can improve upon in time. On defense, Tillman lacks size at 6-foot-8, but he’s highly intelligent. He anchored Michigan State’s defense all season.
Boston gets a sturdy upperclassman at a position of need. The Celtics have complained about excessive youth on the roster this season. Tillman is the kind of prospect who plays above his age. He’s a wise and hardened player, and he should have little issue learning the ropes at the next level.
