The Sixers lost Glenn Robinson III midway through the second quarter.
Despite a strong start in Sunday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Glenn Robinson III wasn’t on the floor long. He suffered a left hip pointer after colliding with Terrance Ferguson at mid-court, and was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game after just seven minutes of action.
Robinson dumped in seven points in those seven minutes, as he continues to make his case for an expanded role in the second unit. The Sixers have extensive competition for minutes on the wing, but Robinson provides a compelling mix of size, athleticism, and shooting on the perimeter.
During his brief stint on the floor Sunday, Robinson saw some minutes as the de facto power forward in a lineup featuring Shake Milton, Furkan Korkmaz, Matisse Thybulle, and Norvel Pelle. It wasn’t the most successful group, but any minutes at the four for Robinson likely decreases the odds of a late-season resurgence from Mike Scott.
On the season, Robinson is a 38.7 percent 3-point shooter, and he hit two of his three attempts from deep in Sunday’s loss. While Brett Brown continues to defer to younger options like Matisse Thybulle and Furkan Korkmaz, Robinson feels like a favorite to crack the nine-man playoff rotation.
Robinson will undergo reevaluation for his hip pointer tomorrow, July 27, and will have his status for Tuesday’s matchup with the Dallas Mavericks updated accordingly. He’s listed as questionable, but in a reassuring statement, Brett Brown said the injury is not considered serious.
We can expect Robinson on the floor when the games start to count, and there’s no reason to believe this hip pointer will have any lingering effects by the time postseason basketball rolls around. Of the Sixers’ two midseason acquisitions from Golden State, it’s Robinson who’s primed for the biggest role. Philadelphia needs him on the floor.
The Sixers do battle with Dallas at 8:30 PM E.T., primetime Tuesday night.
