Sixers vs. Thunder: 3 takeaways from impressive scrimmage loss
3. Al Horford, still not great
On the surface, this game was a big improvement for Al Horford, who looked out of sorts in Friday’s win over Memphis. When you scratch beneath the surface, however, the rotten stench of old age and poor fit begins to permeate the room.
Horford poured in 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting from deep, including a stretch in which he hit three consecutive triples during the first quarter. That helped him save face, but beyond the shooting, one could argue Horford’s performance was largely on par with the Memphis game.
Getting the starting nod in place of Embiid, Horford struggled to adequately defend the rim. Once hailed as one of basketball’s most dynamic frontcourt defenders, Horford has seen his defense wither away in 2019-20. This game was no different. Even as he showcases improved mobility up and down the floor, Horford continues to struggle when asked to defend the rim. OKC waltzed down the lane for several easy looks.
It wasn’t all terrible — there’s something to be said for 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a couple steals — but Horford’s defense, and overall fit on offense, is still a major concern, especially if (when) he’s asked to share the floor with Embiid in more important games.
Simply put, he’s not exactly threatening Milton for his starting job.
