The Hornets could use a solid 3-and-D presence on the wing, as could most NBA teams. Devin Vassell has been a steady riser all season, impressing scouts with his defensive acumen and smooth 3-point stroke. He’s strong value in the second half of the lottery.
Charlotte’s defense is full of holes. While P.J. Washington is a solid foundational piece, he’s not Vassell — a wing who can cover a lot of ground, create havoc in passing lanes, and intelligently protect the weak side. Vassell will rack up defensive counting stats, and in turn create transition opportunities for the Hornets’ offensively-inclined core.
There are questions about Vassell’s ability to develop into anything more than a complementary piece on offense, but his ability to spot-up is plenty valuable. The Hornets have already invested heavily in shot creators, so Vassell would simply need to come in, space the floor, and pick his spots.
