The Hornets feel like such a strange landing spot for LaMelo Ball, whose status and starpower seem to transcend a market like Charlotte. Alas, this is a very possible outcome — and maybe even the ideal outcome for Ball.
While Charlotte has money and assets invested at the point guard spot, the 6-foot-7 Ball is big enough to play next to someone like Devonte’ Graham or Terry Rozier. Ball is a sharp, high-octane playmaker who will elevate everyone around him. The Hornets are built to run the floor and play up-tempo basketball. Graham is a dynamic shooter who should have no trouble spending time off-ball.
Also positive is the Hornets’ culture. Charlotte competes hard, and Ball’s level of engagement has been an area of concern since before high school. If there’s a good rebuilding situation to mine the most out of his talents, the Hornets may be it.
