The Philadelphia 76ers were able to land the franchise point guard because of a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Milwaukee Bucks are next up on this series of articles covering the Philadelphia 76ers‘ best trade with each team in the NBA. The two clubs have executed a total of eight trades spanning from 1972 to 2017.
The Sixers and the Bucks have had several interesting trades in their history. There’s the three-team trade that sent Michael Carter-Williams to the Bucks back in 2015. Philly acquired Jodie Meeks in 2010 and Tyronn Hill in 1999.
Surprisingly none of those deals will be the best one the 76ers made with Milwaukee. The best deal they made ended up landing them a franchise player.
The best trade ever between Philly and Milwaukee was…
The trade doesn’t seem big on paper, but one of two second round picks ended up being Hall of Famer Maurice Cheeks. Cheeks is one of the best point guards in franchise history. He made four All-Star games and five All-Defensive teams. In 11 seasons with Philly, 12.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 2.3 steals and led the club to their last championship in 1983.

The other second round pick ended up being Wilson Washington who 14 games with the Sixers before getting traded to the New Jersey Nets. He only played two total seasons before his NBA career ended.
Fred Carter played for the Bullets before the 76ers where he saw his career at its peak. He averaged 18.8 points with Philly, however, he was past his prime by the time the trade went down in 1976 and his NBA career ended after that season.
Getting a franchise point guard for a player past his prime is definitely a win for the Philadelphia 76ers.
