Should former Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown get another head coaching job?

It’s been a few months since the Philadelphia 76ers let go of former head coach Brett Brown. The franchise has clearly moved on as they have hired Doc Rivers to take Brown’s place. However, it’s becoming clear that Brown is having a harder time with the breakup.

According to ESPN, Brown has decided to not coach the Australian National Team in the 2021 Olympics. Brown was quoted about his withdrawal from the Olympics by ESPN.

"“‘The uncertainties around the direction of my professional future unfortunately mean that I cannot commit to the time and preparation that this job deserves and requires. The difficulties around traveling internationally with my family during the pandemic have also contributed to my decision.”‘"

While the safety of his family was part of the reason, it’s clear that his job uncertainty plays a major factor in his decision. Working under the assumption he still wants to coach, should Brown deserve another shot as an NBA head coach?

The answer to the question above is simple. Yes, Brown does deserve another shot as a head coach. Let’s be clear, Brown is far from a perfect coach. He’s had his failures as a head coach in Philly, but not all of those are on them.

He was given a poorly constructed rosters for the majority of his tenure. He also struggled with keeping players accountable. However, he’s proven he was able to develop players and lead a team to the playoffs, despite his overall lack of success in the postseason.

He also dealt with poor management during his entire 76ers tenure. Each front office executive Brown worked for failed him in some form or fashion.

Sam Hinkie made Brown his voice even when it wasn’t appropriate and gave his terrible teams to coach. Bryan Colangelo left Brown in a mess because of the executive’s wife’s social media indiscretions. Current general manager Brand got rid of a lot of young players and cap space for a poorly constructed roster.

Brown needs a chance on a team with good management where he could properly lead a rebuild. It seems unlikely that will be available for him this offseason, but he could be right back in the mix for a head coaching gig as soon as next offseason.

Despite failing to deliver a title with the Philadelphia 76ers, Brown does deserve a shot at redemption as an NBA head coach. Only time will tell when that will happen, but it’s clear that not having an NBA job has affected how he’s approaching the rest of his basketball career.
