The Philadelphia 76ers can win the East. Here’s why
3. Doc Rivers pushes the right buttons.
Let’s be clear: Glenn “Doc” Rivers is a great coach.
Let’s not understate his achievements: 943-681 as a coach, led Boston to a championship in 2008 and back to the Finals in 2010, a career winning percentage of 58.1 percent. The man has stamped winning in every place that he has walked upon in his 20 years roaming the sidelines. Yet, it’s his three blown 3-1 leads that makes many leery for his tenure in Philadelphia.
Nevertheless, he is as certified as they come and maybe the most accomplished coach that the Sixers have had since Larry Brown. But, can Doc push the right buttons with this roster? That will be the interesting storyline throughout next season.
There isn’t much shooting to fully unlock the potentials of both Simmons and Embiid, the bench is scarce, Al Horford’s role is undefined in the context of this Sixers team, and there isn’t much flexibility to move pieces around. Rivers has his work cut out for him.
The Sixers have what it takes to win the Eastern Conference. With a few moves here and there, Philadelphia can position itself to be real contenders in this upcoming season. Who knows; maybe a championship coming down Broad Street isn’t as far off as we think.
