The Philadelphia 76ers will benefit from Daryl Morey’s ability to evaluate draft talent.

Hopefully, the Philadelphia 76ers can close the potential deal to bring in Daryl Morey as their new head of basketball operation. Assuming that they do, one of the many areas that he will able to improve is their draft evaluation.

To be fair to the Sixers, outside of Markelle Fultz, Anzejs Pasecniks, and arguably Furkan Korkmaz, the franchise has done pretty well in the draft since 2016. That being said, Morey has been able to find legit talent in every part of the draft.

Morey would improve the Sixers draft evaluation.

Morey can find talent in both rounds of the draft like his protege Sam Hinkie once did for the 76ers. Granted Morey has never hoarded second round picks to the extent that Hinkie did, however, he still knew how to find talent late in the draft, as well as in the first round.

He’s had a 13-year tenure with the Houston Rockets and below are some of the notable first and second round picks he hit on as legit NBA players.

  • Aaron Brooks, 26th pick
  • Patrick Patterson, 14th pick
  • Marcus Morris, 14th pick
  • Nikola Mirotic, 23rd pick
  • Chandler Parsons, 38th pick
  • Jeremy Lamb, 12th pick
  • Terrence Jones, 18th pick
  • Montrezl Harrell, 32nd pick
  • De’Anthony Melton, 46th

It goes without saying that Morey still had his fair share of draft bust, but that’s still no list to look down at either. Outside of Brooks, Parsons, and Jones, all the players on that list above played in the NBA last season.

Those picks are going to be in the range that the Philadelphia 76ers will end up choosing from most drafts, so it’s fair to say that the Sixers will be in good hands in terms of the draft if he takes the helm.
