2. Eric Gordon
The next player that Morey is connected to who could help the 76ers is Eric Gordon. Since signing with the Rockets in 2016, Gordon has been an important part to their success. Playing with James Harden, Gordon averaged 16.5 points a game. He took over eight 3-pointers per night and made 36 percent from beyond the arc. Obviously, he checks off a very big box in the Sixers needs department.
There is no ambiguity about how he could maximize the Sixers’ offensive capabilities. Although he is a veteran at the tail end of his career (Gordon turns 32 in December), Gordon still has value within a revamped offense system that Doc Rivers will soon define. Embiid will still get his touches in the post, so adding Eric Gordon to be an option as a 3-point threat would behoove the Sixers. What would it take to bring Gordon here?
In 2019, Gordon signed a four-year extension worth $75.6 million. He is set to make almost $17 million this season. Morey could offer Josh Richardson and Mike Scott in exchange for Gordon. The Sixers won’t be able to afford Richardson when his contract expires in 2022, so Morey may jump on this opportunity to bring in a more reliable 3-point shooter. Richardson is four years younger, so Houston may find that deal more attractive than keeping Gordon, especially if Houston’s new coach and GM doesn’t see a team fit for Gordon anymore along with James Harden and Russell Westbrook.
