3. D.J. Augustin
VERDICT: Treat
I’ve written about D.J. Augustin’s fit in the past. Philadelphia needs help in the guard rotation, and just one season ago — before the arrival of Markelle Fultz in Orlando — Augustin was a bonafide starting point guard. Now, the Sixers could feasibly have him for a minimum contract.
While Augustin only 5-foot-11 and well past his prime, he’s not the one-dimensional talent of someone like Korver. He’s a shifty ball-handler, a smart playmaker out of the pick-and-roll, and a three-level scorer who can truly give the Sixers a boost off the bench.
In 2018-19, Augustin started 81 games, averaged 28 minutes a night, and shot 42.1 percent from downtown. He’s capable of playing without the ball in hand, and his skill set fits the typical mold of Doc Rivers point guards.
In Augustin, the Sixers would nab an under-the-radar point guard who can provide real value in a championship pursuit. He shouldn’t start, and the Sixers shouldn’t view him as a universal solvent at point guard, but he’s a massive upgrade over the Trey Burkes and Raul Netos of the world.
