The Celtics need depth all-around, and bolstering the backcourt behind Kemba Walker is a smart move at 14. While Tyrese Maxey was inconsistent in his lone collegiate season, his grit and determination are well-documented. He’s the kind of competitor you want in the locker room — especially on a contender.
Maxey will defend both guard spots at 6-foot-3. He’s a pit bull at the point of attack, using his 6-foot-6 wingspan to disrupt ball-handlers. On offense, there’s a lot to like. He was inefficient at Kentucky last season, but he’s a comfortable scorer and playmaker out of the pick-and-roll who, on tape, should have no trouble hitting shots from deep.
The Celtics thrive on the hard-nosed disposition Maxey feeds into. He’s the perfect mentee for someone like Marcus Smart. Maxey will do the little things to help a team win, and with less offensive responsibilities — and paired with a slew of star talent on the wing — Maxey’s strengths should shine brighter than his weaknesses.
