The Cavs are, for the moment, invested in the Darius Garland-Collin Sexton partnership. It makes sense to then invest on a 3-and-D wing who can complement both, and thus Devin Vassell is the pick. Cleveland in general could use a boost defensively.
At 6-foot-7, Vassell is long, agile, and instinctive. He’s one of the best perimeter defenders in this draft — if not the best. He can hang on ball, or he can use his lanky wingspan to interrupt passing lanes and generate turnovers.
On the other end, Vassell was a tremendously efficient spot-up shooter at Florida State. He shot 41.5 percent from deep, showed enough of a pull-up game to merit hope, and his length should allow him to finish well inside when attacking closeouts. He’s everything NBA teams want out of the 3-and-D mold nowadays.
