Sixers: How will Doc Rivers use Ben Simmons offensively?
How should Doc Rivers use the Philadelphia 76ers’ All-Star playmaker?
There’s no doubt that the Philadelphia 76ers as a whole have a lot of questions to answer this fall, their new head coach Doc Rivers has his own share to deal with. Of course, one of those questions has to do with Ben Simmons.
Despite being one of the best players on the roster, he’s also one of the most unique players in the league. Simmons’ refusal to shoot outside shots stops him from being one of the players in the league.
His unwillingness to shoot the ball, paired alongside his ability as a playmaker at 6-foot-10 makes using him in the half-court a unique challenge for his new head coach. It’s not like Rivers hasn’t dealt with players with unique talents before.
In fact, in some ways, Simmons has a lot of similarities between two players that use to play for Rivers. In terms of how to use Simmons, Rivers already has an outline of how to use him in two different roles.
The biggest factor in which way Rivers will use Simmons will be based on the offseason moves. Shake Milton has proven to be a valuable player for the Sixers, but he’s not a starting point guard for a playoff team. With that in mind, the franchise should be searching for another playmaker.
How Simmons is used in this upcoming season will be dictated on whether or not the 76ers can find themselves a legit starting point guard. If they do, then he will be more of a point forward, but if they don’t then he’ll probably be used more as a point guard.
