Former Philadelphia 76ers’ big man Amir Johnson is getting another chance.

After a good overall career in the NBA, Amir Johnson‘s last stint with the Philadelphia 76ers two years ago didn’t end well. He clearly lost a step and couldn’t contribute on defense anymore. As a result, he didn’t get an NBA contract last season and it was looking like his NBA career was over.

Luckily for him, he has gotten another chance to play at a competitive level at a near-elite level. According to Jared Weiss of The Athletic, Johnson was one of the few former NBA veterans to join the G-League’s Ignite team.

This team is different from normal G-League teams as it’s the one high school stars can choose as an alternative path to get to the NBA versus going to college. This opportunity is perfect for Johnson if he wants to have a shot resurrecting his NBA career.

Johnson can make an impact on the Ignite team.

More from The Sixer Sense

There are only a few players in the league more qualified than Johnson for this role. He came to the NBA straight out of high school and knows how much of a struggle that can be. Surely his experience there would be invaluable.

Johnson was a very good defensive big man during his prime and would help develop several of the big men prospects on the roster. Players like Isaiah Todd, Kia Sotto, and Princepal Singh could learn a thing or two from Johnson.

Johnson isn’t the only player joining these young prospects. Bobby Brown, Reggie Hearn, Brandon Ashley, and Cody Demps will also be on this G-League roster. However, Johnson has the most NBA experience with 14 years of experience, which is beyond valuable for these young prospects.

It’s doubtful that the age of 33, Johnson will make an NBA comeback. However, it’s nice to see the former Philadelphia 76ers reserve big man getting another shot.
