Sixers offseason grades: Signing Dwight Howard

  • B+

I was very surprised to see a lot of backlash when Dwight Howard was signed. I, on the other hand, thought it was a great signing. Horford having been traded, there was a big gap in the roster at the backup center role. Who better to fill this gap than the man who just played backup center (even starting some playoff games) for the current champions.

Dwight is a future hall of famer on a veterans minimum who offers the Sixers great rim protection, tons of rebounding on both ends, and is always a lob threat. My biggest concern was chemistry and his willingness to be a backup again, but these concerns have been eradicated as Howard’s message in the media has primarily been how he wants to support the team in whatever way he can and how the team has so much potential for success, a good sign from the veteran big man.

Where this signing falls short is that I was hoping for a stretch big, like Frank Kaminsky, to come off the bench and give the offense a different tool to use, especially when Ben plays with the second unit. Regardless of this, Howard is still a good acquisition.
