The Philadelphia 76ers’ front office should keep tabs on Marvin Bagley III.
The Philadelphia 76ers are playing very well right now. They hold the NBA’s best record at 6-1, but that doesn’t mean the club shouldn’t look to improve the roster. One way they could do that is to trade for a former second overall pick.
Marvin Bagley III’s father apparently wants his son to be traded from the Sacramento Kings. This was made known by the player’s father on Twitter and that was made into a segment on ESPN’s The Jump.
While it seems like this was unprompted by Bagley’s father, the idea of getting the big man out of Sacramento should be an idea that the Kings front office should consider.
Bagley’s struggles and why the Sixers are a good fit.

For his career, the combo big man has averaged 14.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from the 3-point line. Those aren’t bad numbers for a 21-year-old entering his third season.
However, Bagley’s production has seen a decline over these first three seasons, with this one seeing the most dramatic drop. In seven games he’s averaged 10.9 points and 8.1 rebounds. While the rebounds are a career high for him, the drop in points per game is concerning. He’s converting only 35.8 percent of his field goals and 26.7 percent of his 3-pointers this year.
He hasn’t lived up to the hype of being the second overall pick at this point. With players like De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield, Harrison Barnes, and even rookie Tyrese Haliburton all head of Bagley in terms of franchise importance, a change of scenery might help him.
He certainly has time to turn it around, but outside of Hassan Whiteside, Bagley has no veteran big men to learn from. On top of that Whiteside’s game is nothing like Bagley’s, so he can’t really help him develop. The young combo big needs to learn from a modern day big man and the Sixers have one of the best in Joel Embiid.
While Bagley is much thinner in frame than the 76ers’ All-Star, both he and Embiid has similar skills. Both can be pretty good in the post and mid-range, while still being respectable outside of the 3-point arc.
He wouldn’t have a big role with the Sixers, but he could develop under a good head coach in Doc Rivers and learn from Embiid and Dwight Howard. What it would take to get the young big man from Sacramento is unclear, but if they are selling his value low, then he’s worth a look by Philly’s front office.
With the future between Bagley and the Kings uncertain, the Philadelphia 76ers should monitor that situation moving forward.
