The Philadelphia 76ers waived rookie Dakota Mathias.

The primary focus of this rookie report is that the Philadelphia 76ers waived on of their rookies, However, that’s not the only important thing of note that occurred around the Sixers first year players this past week.

Dakota Mathias was the rookie who waived off his two-way contract, according to Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice. The Sixers signed shooting guard Rayjon Tucker to a two-way deal in his place, per Shams Charina of The Athletic. With that being written, Tucker isn’t a rookie and Mathias isn’t on the team, so neither won’t be included on the rookie report moving forward.

21st pick, 2020 draft

Tyrese Maxey saw his role reduced drastically this past week and the main reason for it is due to the 76ers having a full roster. Maxey moved back to a bench role once Seth Curry was cleared to return. A reduced role has seen Maxey’s production drop dramatically. Maxey probably had his worst week as a professional yet going a combined 2-9 from the field. That shouldn’t be the norm moving forward.

Season averages: 9.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.2 blocks, 0.7 turnovers, and 1.3 fouls. Shooting 46.2 percent on field goals, 26.3 percent on 3-pointers, and 77.8 on free throws.

49th pick, 2020 draft

For those hoping that Isaiah Joe would still have a role on coming off the bench once Furkan Korkmaz healed from his injury, don’t be too disappointed. While the rookie has been impressive thus far, head coach Doc Rivers isn’t known for relying on rookies too often so seeing Joe consistently on the bench shouldn’t be too big of a surprise this season.

Season averages: 7.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.4 blocks, 0.4 turnovers, and 1.9 fouls. Shooting 37.5 percent on field goals, 38.6 percent on 3-pointers, and 100.0 on free throws.

58th pick, 2020 draft

Like Joe, Paul Reed also didn’t see any action this past week, despite Rivers insinuating that he would like more depth at the power forward spot moving forward, per Paul Hudrick of 97.3 ESPN. It appears that Reed is the one rookie that needs the most development before being a part of a regular rotation, despite Philly’s need at his position.

Season averages: 4.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 0.8 assist, 0.3 steals, 1.0 blocks, 1.3 turnovers, and 1.0 fouls. Shooting 42.1 percent on field goals and 0.0 percent on 3-pointers.

There shouldn’t be too much surprise that the Philadelphia 76ers didn’t rely on their rookies with having a nearly full roster available. Regarding the future of Mathias, we at The Sixer Sense hope he finds success elsewhere in the NBA.
