It’s been an interesting ride for all three of the Philadelphia 76ers rookies this past week. One of the second round picks had a particularly rough time as he swung from one end of the spectrum to the other in regards to playing time.

It should also be noted that none of the rookies played in all four of the Sixers games this past week.

21st, 2020 draft

Point guard Tyrese Maxey only appeared in the second two games this past week. Those appearances were brief as he only averaged 6.5 minutes and 1.0 points in those outings. Due to the injury to Tobias Harris, Maxey is one of the few players on the roster who can create his own offense so he might be in line for a bigger role until Harris returns.

Season averages: 8.1 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.5 steals, 0.1 blocks, 0.7 turnovers, and 1.2 fouls. Shooting 44.8 percent on field goals, 27.8 percent on 3-pointers, and 88.0 on free throws.

49th pick, 2020 draft

Isaiah Joe began the week by appearing to have supplanted Furkan Korkmaz in the rotation. Then Korkmaz earned his place in the rotation back within one good game as a replacement starter. It got so bad for Joe that he didn’t even appear in the game against Dallas Mavericks.

It appears that he’s on his way to play in the G-League bubble with the 76ers’ affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, according to Noah Levick of NBCSPhilly. This is probably what’s best for the wing as he clearly needs more minutes to develop but head coach Doc Rivers appears to have a hard time fitting him into the rotation consistently.

Season averages: 4.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.2 blocks, 0.3 turnovers, and 1.1 fouls. Shooting 36.7 percent on field goals, 38.3 percent on 3-pointers, and 100.0 on free throws.

58th pick, 2020 draft

Big man Paul Reed has continued his tear in the G-League. He had four double-doubles in five games and had a G-League career-high 35 points against the Oklahoma City Blue. He’s even improving by staying out of foul trouble as he only had two games with five or more fouls. It should be noted that his scoring did cool off a bit overall as he only scored above 20 points twice this past week.

G-League season averages: 22.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 2.2 steals, 2.2 blocks, 2.4 turnovers, and 4.4 fouls. Shooting 59.3 percent on field goals, 43.2 percent on 3-pointers, and 73.3 on free throws.

Player of the Week: Embiid has career game. dark. Next

It will be interesting if Joe can have the same level of success as Reed has had with the Blue Coats now that he’s joining them. For the Philadelphia 76ers’ long-term future, they should surely hope he can.
