Sixers’ potential first-round matchup #2: Charlotte Hornets

There’s a decent chance both LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward return by the playoffs, which would make the Sixers’ job harder. Generally speaking, Charlotte doesn’t stand a chance — there’s not enough proven late-season production on that roster. Even so, the aesthetic value of Charlotte’s offense is enough for me to endorse this series.

The Hornets are a genuinely fun basketball team with several players who are easy to root for from a neutral perspective. Hayward was a borderline All-Star, Terry Rozier has taken “the leap,” and Ball should win Rookie of the Year despite his injury. Charlotte gets up and down the floor, can bury 3s in a hurry, and have the ideal spunk for a young up-and-comer.

Charlotte’s collection of talent guards would be its best weapon against Philadelphia. The Sixers have struggled to contain quick-twitch scorers in the past, and while Matisse Thybulle and George Hill help on that front, the Hornets still have the potential for an explosive outing or two.

Frankly, this is the perfect matchup from Philadelphia’s perspective. Fun basketball, interesting young stars, and virtually no real chance (knock on wood) of the Sixers actually losing four of seven.
