Sixers’ Player of the Week: Joel Embiid returns to MVP form

The Sixers All-Star big man Joel Embiid had a slow start to this past week, but by the end of the past five-game stretch, he showed why he should still be the front runner of the MVP. That is the reason why he’s earned this player of the week.

Player of the Week: Joel Embiid

For the first time this season, Embiid didn’t perform well in an individual matchup and it was against Steven Adams of the New Orleans Pelicans. In the loss, Embiid had 14 points, nine rebounds, one assist, two blocks, three turnovers, and four turnovers, while making 5-16 field goal attempts, 0-3 free throw attempts, and 4-4 free throw attempts. From this game on, Embiid stepped up his game in a big way.

In the Philadelphia 76ers blowout win against the rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder. In just 27 minutes, he finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocks, two turnovers, and three fouls. He shot 10-17 from the floor, 0-2 from downtown, and 7-9 from the foul line.

The Dallas Mavericks have a pretty deep depth chart for the center position, but Embiid still took them to town in another Sixers victory. In 26 minutes, he ended the game with 36 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, one turnover, and one foul. He converted 10-17 from the field, 2-3 from deep, and 14-15 from the charity stripe.

Embiid dominated the short-handed Brooklyn Nets in a close win for the 76ers. He had 39 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two turnovers, while going 13-29 on field goals, 3-6 on 3-pointers, and 10-11 on free throws.

Philly’s big man dominated the Los Angeles Clippers in another Sixers victory. Embiid finished with 36 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, one steal, two turnovers, and one foul. He went 10-20 from the field, 0-3 from behind the arc, and 16-18 from the foul line.

Honorable Mention

If Embiid didn’t dominate as he did, Furkan Korkmaz would have been the player of the week. Instead, the wing gets the honorable mention and is worthy of it. He had three games with at least 18 points. On the week, he averaged 15.8 points on 45.2 percent from downtown.

Embiid proved he should still be the favorite for MVP this past week. He averaged 30.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.
