5 Play-in Tournament free agent targets: Trey Lyles
The biggest hole on the Philadelphia 76ers roster this season has been at the backup power forward spot. Mike Scott looks like he’s on his last contract, the same could be said for Anthony Tolliver, and Paul Reed is a rookie whose head coach Doc Rivers doesn’t have trust in yet.
More than likely, both Scott and Tolliver won’t be back next season, and while Reed could see time at the four spot, he could also be used as a reserve center if Dwight Howard doesn’t return or he’s used more sparingly.
That brings me to Trey Lyles who’s been a reserve stretch big for the San Antonio Spurs this year and last. He’s a long defender who can guard both power forwards and centers. He doesn’t provide much in rebounding, or scoring, but is an efficient 3-point shooter, which the Sixers need.
This year, he’s averaging 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds, while converting 35.0 percent of his shots from downtown. Not a flashy name, nor stats, but he can fill a need the Sixers need and he should be affordable. Two years ago he signed a two-year deal for $11 million, which is the max Philly should pay for a player of his caliber. However, there’s a chance they could get him for cheaper if the market isn’t friendly to him.
