Ranking every player on the Sixers roster — 14. Isaiah Joe

Isaiah Joe likes to shoot the basketball.

The Sixers drafted Joe with the understanding that he will take and make a lot of 3s when provided the opportunity to do so. He was one of the most prolific shooters in college basketball, attempting over 10 triples a game at Arkansas. He has the chance to earn a similar label in the NBA. He is a chucker through and through, in all the best ways.

Few teams need high-end shooters like the Sixers. If Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons are going to win at the highest level, Philadelphia needs to spread out the floor around them. Joe was never given a real chance to crack the rotation this season, but the flashes have been immensely positive. He hit 36.8 percent of his 3s this season, while averaging 10.0 attempts per 36 minutes. In an expanded role, Joe’s volume from behind the 3-point line would be a major benefit to the second unit.

In addition to his shooting, Joe has proven himself a solid team defender. Many of the concerns coming out of college revolved around Joe’s slight build and potential inability to handle NBA physicality. He has shed those concerns this season, with a high defensive I.Q. and a clear willingness to compete.

While the rookie spotlight has been largely focused on Tyrese Maxey and Paul Reed this season, Joe is a real player. Someone who has a very bright future in the Sixers organization. He should be part of the regular rotation as soon as next season, and is well on his way to outperformed his spot in the draft. He makes certain upcoming free agents more expendable.
