NBA superstar Stephen Curry will become an unrestricted free agent in 2022. Philadelphia could be a desirable destination for him. Why would he choose to become a Sixer?

The year is 2022. The Sixers are playing on opening night at the Wells Fargo Center. During the game, Joel Embiid dominates the paint, while his new teammate, Stephen Curry, drains threes like he’s on his way to eclipsing Ray Allen’s all-time 3-point record. How did this happen? What lured him away from the Golden Gate Bridge to be closer to the Walt Whitman Bridge? Let’s identify five reasons why Curry could possibly wear a Sixers uniform in 2022.

5 reasons why Curry could become a Sixer: Ties to East Coast

Not since Wilt Chamberlain has there been a more dominant Warrior than Stephen Curry. As a point guard drafted out of Davidson, the West Coast is all he has known ever since. The Bay area has been his oyster and the people there adore him. Yet, if you think he won’t leave in free agency because he’s revered as a legend in that region, just ask New England Patriots fans how they felt before he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

It is no secret that Curry spent time growing up on the East Coast. His father, Dell Curry, played his best basketball with the Charlotte Hornets alongside Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, and Muggsy Bogues. Once his career ended, the former NBA sharp-shooter settled in the Tar Heel State, and now is the color commentator for the Hornets.

Why is this significant? Well, as Steph Curry’s children get older, the grandparents could seek to spend more time with the little ones. Ayesha Curry, Steph’s wife, also could use the extra support being closer to the grandparents as she continues to pursue her professional goals as a cookbook author and cooking personality.

She too grew up in North Carolina and would find it comforting to have her family’s roots strengthened with a move back east. Not to mention, Food Network has headquarters not just in San Francisco, but also in New York City and Atlanta.
